Legislation
Within every business, every school, every home and every citizen, the desire to create a better place to work and live burns anew. The resourcefulness and spirit of the people of District 4 was seen in real results in several key areas, including education, healthcare, civic restoration, and law enforcement in the past legislative sessions in Baton Rouge.
A key element in renovating our damaged infrastructure is funding. Senator Murray helped secure millions of dollars for projects throughout District 4 by providing additional dollars to hospitals who offered health care to indigent patients following Hurricane Katrina. Also, UNO and Delgado received several million dollars to repair damages and help them regain their status as two of our city's finest universities. Renewed funding was also authorized for the 911 telephone district and numerous elderly rehabilitation centers.
In addition, all public school teachers were provided with a well-deserved 15% pay raise and nearly 2 million dollars was earmarked for the restoration of City Park, the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Fund and the renovation of Longvue Gardens.
Streamlining the efficiency of municipal government also rated highly on the Legislative agenda. With an election to decide the fate of levee board consolidation slated for September 30th, further consolidation was approved within the Assessors Office, Civil and District Court, and Civil and District Clerk of Court, and Civil and Criminal Sheriff - all with the intention of providing the citizens of District 4 with practical municipal services.
Senator Murray was also in the forefront of the battle against fraud in the post-Katrina landscape. Senate Bill 620 increased penalties for insurance companies who refuse to pay claims in a timely manner. Senate Bill 561 required all insurance adjusters to be fully licensed.
As your senator, Ed Murray remains vigilant in the fight to keep neighborhoods of District 4 safe for our families and businesses. He is a member of a criminal justice task force actively working to revise and reinforce the criminal justice system of New Orleans. This past session saw several landmark statements, including a bill ensuring the safe return of all illegally obtained firearms in the New Orleans metropolitan area and judges are now prohibited from releasing any suspect accused of a crime involving a firearm on their own recognizance.
Much has been achieved, yet more remains to be accomplished. Senator Murray is helping to lead our remarkable recovery with my desire to promote and restore the small businesses of District 4. Our Road Home to Recovery program is an innovative tool in helping citizens renovate and rebuild their damaged homes - for more information, you can visit www.edwinmurray.com. Through hard work, Senator Murray remains committed to helping reshape a safer and more prosperous New Orleans for the people of District 4. |
